About Us
Our Story
Our journey began in 1953 when Mr. Keith Gardner, having completed his national service, qualified as an Ophthalmic Optician. He joined the family practice in the Bigg Market, Newcastle.
In 1962, Keith acquired A M Fentiman Opticians at 17 Blandford Street, Sunderland. When his son, Robert Gardner, graduated from university in 1978, the practice was renamed KB & RL Gardner. Under the stewardship of practice manager Hilda Lowther and a firm commitment to quality, the practice flourished.
With the recent retirement of both Hilda and Robert, the practice is now entrusted to Simon Birtwisle, who, like Robert, has a deep-rooted passion for independent optometry. Coming from a lineage of ten opticians, starting with his grandfather K C Haikings, Simon will continue to uphold our independent ethos. We eagerly anticipate the next chapter of our story in Sunderland!
